Artwork At The McMenamins Grand Lodge - Portland Getaway

Wanted to share some of the great artwork that can be found in the McMenamins Grand Lodge we stayed at in Portland. These photos are a poor representation of how vivid and alive these pieces are in person. It is also a small fraction of the overall artwork within the lodge.

McMenamins Grand Lodge - Portland Getaway

When we arrived in Portland, we went to the McMenamins Kennedy School for our getaway lodging. This is where I stayed at last year and enjoyed it immensely. I didn’t make any reservations because I didn’t think a Sunday and Monday night stay would be a problem. I was wrong, so wrong. They were booked up solid for the next two weeks but they did find us lodging at their Grand Lodge location. The former Masonic lodge ended up being a great choice for us and the $60 a night price was easier on the wallet.

Here are some pictures from the outside of the lodge.

They even had a pair of old time fire escapes that I haven’t seen since my high school days.

Here is the courtyard and there is even an outdoor bar and disc golf course on the grounds.

Odd sunset sky that we captured on camera.

Texas Barnyard Massacre - The Portland Getaway

After walking out of Powells bookstore, we picked up a slice of pizza at a corner pizza joint called Roccos.

On the top of the menu was a slice called The Texas Barnyard Massacre. Of course, I had to order it and it was quite delicious. I ate the sausage on top one at a time for about 5 minutes before I felt comfortable lifting the damn thing.

About Powell’s Book Store (http://www.powells.com/)
This place literally takes up a city block and could easily fit multiple traditional book stores within it. It is so big that the book book genre areas are rooms and color coded. The bookshelves are approximately 10 feet tall. An amazing place and I walked out with just one book, a great book of Oregon wineries.

Here is a picture of the huge piece of artwork outside of Powell’s. More pictures from the Portland getaway to come!

Sunday Morning Hike At Barclay Lake

Tried to do the mineral springs hike again but the road was closed that leads to the trail head. After driving that far to get that sorry news, head a few miles more to do Barclay Lake. The only other time I did that hike (Aug 20 2008, click here), it was a bit gloomy out for the first half of the hike. Here are some pictures in reverse order.

Here we are on the far side of the lake. The mud in the receding part of the lake had lots of stinky fish stuff and Bogie wanted that perfume so badly.

A shot of Mount Index, which is viewable from all parts of the lake.

Some pictures at the front end of the lake.

Some trail shots for the 2 mile hike to the lake.
