Big 4 Ice Caves
Had this hike on the to do list for quite some time, last week we were able to scratch it off as complete. The ice caves are formed by a reoccurring winter avalanche of huge proportions and then a steady summer melt that flows from the crest under the ice. This much ice will never go away completely and its mass gets replenished every new winter.
The trail itself is fairly short, fairly flat and quite beautiful. There is a small marsh you walk over via a boardwalk.
Then there is a new bridge that was finished this year, the previous bridge was destroyed via avalanche a few years before. Bogie struggles with bridges like this and it took a good five minutes for use to cross ... one very measured puppy step after another.
Then you can see the avalanche damage and the warnings as you get closer to the caves themselves.
The caves are amazing but way to dangerous to enter. There are cases where they collapsed with people in the caves and that can be quite the buzz kill!
Heading back to the trail head.
In this picture of bogie on the hike back has a large summit in the background. I climbed that summit this week and it was literally spectacular! More about that later!
Bogie quite comfortable, ready to head home but there was one small problem!
