Guys Diners, Drive Ins And Dives Trek

Lately, I’ve been enamored with the Food Networks and Guys Diners, Drive Ins And Dives show. So I decided that I wanted to make an effort to see these places when ever I can. I went to the food networks web site and found a small listing of the places visited on the first DVD set they are selling. I found what looks like five of them that might be in my area, so I decided I wanted to iPhone them. That is to say that I want to put links to these diners sites on my blog (so I can search them) and add them to my address book (so I can use the iPhone mapping feature to find them). Talk about something that would make a great iPhone app! Wow, a lot of them are within striking distance of my hometown of Danville Illinois. Will need to check them out on the next home visit.

Heather Lake - November 2008

Well, the round bright shiny thing made an appearance today and I needed a mental health day anyway. So I took bogie to Heather Lake and brought back these pictures.

My camera seems to do something very strange with falling snow but you get the idea. See the water flowing behind bogie? Lots of that on the trail today!

One thing I noticed was the amount of running water on the trail. Must have been over a dozen small waterfalls and active runoff areas. The sun didn’t come out on the trail until we were leaving ... but I got back to the office by 2:30 PM and able to finish up my work day.

There was just a little bit of snow at the lake, just enough to make the wooden bridges a little slick. Bogie loved it and was running back and forth on the bridges, sliding on occasion.

Say this split tree and thought it would be a great photo opportunity. Glad this one turned out but I really need to get a better camera.

Pushing Daisies - One Of The Best Shows You Probably Are Not Watching

It looks more and more like ABC is going to cancel Pushing Daisies, because not enough people are tuning in to watch it as it air on LIVE television. It is a shame but not surprising. Pushing Daisies is a delightful, hilarious, well acted but more importantly a show for smart people. There in lies the problem because those that want to watch SMART television don’t watch network television at the moment it airs. They record it on a DVR, they wait for the DVD set to come out (so they can Netflix it), they may purchase it on iTunes or get it from other less reputable ways.

Pushing Daisies centers on the life of Ned, a quirky pie-maker gifted with the mysterious ability to bring dead things back to life by touching them. However, if he touches them a second time, they immediately die again. So of course, Ned has touched his one true love and his faithful dog to bring them back to life. They are an intimate part of his life but have to keep a reasonable distance. How can this be funny? You really have to watch the pilot episode to see how they pull it off. It is delightful!


Lucky you ... I just deleted about three paragraphs of soapbox ranting about network television and their “in your face” advertising methods. It just seemed like either preaching to the choir or preaching to a brick wall. Either way, not much in the way of net results.

Anyway, if you get a chance, try out Pushing Daisies. Season One is available on DVD from Netflix and iTunes. Season Two episodes are also available on iTunes for $1.99 a piece (still better than getting interrupted in the show by endless repetitive reminders that McDonalds sells hamburgers ... who knew?). Oh, I did sneak in a little soapbox in there didn’t I?

Fall Continues On Centennial Trail

Started work about 5 AM this morning before having to go down to Ballard for a customer meeting. Got back into the office at 1 PM and the sun was out. This time of year, that means you have to go out into it because the bright sunny orb is going to become more and more infrequent in the coming months.

Unboxing A Maltby Pizza - Katie’s Chicken Pie

A lot of attention goes (rightly so) to the Maltby Cafe just a tad northwest of Seattle Washington. Right next door is Maltby Pizza and it has some pretty good eats itself. Today, I was craving a Katie’s Chicken Pie ... which includes garlic cream sauce, garlic chicken breast strips, mushrooms, red onions and feta cheese.

Lowell River Trail (Fall 2008)

Haven’t been back to the Lowell Riverfront trail since early in the summer. So we had a little break in the day, so the wonder dog and I headed out. This is still a largely unknown trail but bogie still found a half dozen or so new friends to sniff and rub noses with.

This is the first time I’ve gone over the land bridge that connect the park with the city of Everett. Not much there but snapped this picture anyway.


Right about where this water dish was ... which bogie would not drink from ... was a little gaunt down to the river.

Two steps in, bogie evidently hit a hole and was completely submerged. Luckily, still on the leach, it was quick and easy to bring him in. The water was pretty calm, so there wasn't any real danger ... but ... his eyes sure did get big!

Now this was a little weird, there used to be a branch at the end of the trail where you would go around a semi loop around a meadow. This time, that was totally blocked off with a huge mound of dirt covered with some green stuff. So we took that opportunity to snap a pic of it.
